The

Do
you sit correctly?
It
is a fact that back pain is common today, diminishing the
quality of
life and often resulting in wasted working days. Sitting incorrectly is one of the main causes of back pain. The sitting position is not
ideal for the human body, but it is
largely imposed upon us: at work, and at home, we find
ourselves sitting too often and for
much too long.
By learning how to sit in an adapted way, we can prevent
back
pain, or give relief to existing pain.
Support cushions are used for the upper parts of the body of a
person
when seated upright on a flat surface where additional
comfort is
needed. And, they can
take the place of multiple pillows
or cushions that need constant
adjustment. Some can
be used
out of doors, or in vehicles, as well as in beds and chairs. But, usually
support cushions are either complicated; relatively
difficult to erect; not very
comfortable; giving insufficient
and/or incorrect support for the back,
and for the arms in particular;
or they are heavy; unattractive;
awkward; and cumbersome.
This
present invention, BOLSTA®, is
flat-based and free-standing; with a sloping concave inside back;
sloping, protruding armrests; and
configured to fit the upper portion of the body of an adult person in
repose, to provide the correct body-hugging, contact-support and comfort
for the upper and lower back, as well as the arms.
BOLSTA® takes
the place of multiple pillows and cushions.
The vertical outside back of BOLSTA® cushions any hard
vertical surface such as a bed headboard, chair, seat, wall, or in a
boat or other vehicle.
BOLSTA® measures: 50 cm high, 62 cm wide, depth at
arms: 46 cm, depth at base: 22 cm, depth at top: 4 cm, and weighs
approximately 2 kilos. See illustration.
BOLSTA® is ideal for hospitals as well as domestic use.
BOLSTA® Nos.2 & 3 have a unique washable and
liquid-resistant, non-irritant, polyurethane “skin” of flexible
lacquer.

Standards Institution specifications for combustion-modification, so as
to be flame-retardant according to:

BOLSTA® is ergonomically simple, compact, light-weight, and
durability-tested to: Grammer
Formteile GmbH Stress Test (Mechanical
Resistance No. 009/FOG 8001).
BOLSTA® support remains constant as a result of its
resilient, flexible, moulded polyurethane which maintains the
cushion’s shape: it
will immediately return to shape and the normal rest position, after
movement of the upper parts of the body of a person, when displacement
ceases. This
resilient quality allows the cushion to be successfully stored flat by
folding its arms inward and securing it with tape, cord, or rubber band. Each BOLSTA® is supplied with a removable, washable
cover, which is complete with a loop handle for carrying or storing.
BOLSTAR is configured to conform to the “correct-seating”
criteria of Dr. Janet Travell, M.D., and the world-renowned posture
expert. BOLSTA®
therefore gives comfort to the upper portion of the body, providing the
perfect slope for the back to prevent muscle fatigue, i.e. the specific incline of this cushion prevents the
“drooping-shoulder” position, allowing the shoulder blades to drop
back slightly behind the centre of the spine.
BOLSTA® also gives excellent contact-support for the
upper and lower back, and for the arms of a person from the shoulders
downward: the
specific angle of the armrests provide constant contact-support for the
entire arms in repose, from shoulder to wrist. It is especially beneficial for the upper arms when
someone is holding a baby, reading a book, or eating in bed - preventing cramp, stiffness and pain across the back
of the neck-often caused when armrests are too low or too high.
And, in a boat, BOLSTA® cushions the body against
uncomfortable sides and railings. BOLSTA®
can be utilized successfully in any vehicle where the mobility of the
body needs to remain independent of vehicle motion.
BOLSTA® can also be used advantageously as a pillow or leg
rest when laid flat. BOLSTA® is a boon for heart patients in
recovery: clasped to
the chest with the cushion arms around the body, it relieves the pain
caused by coughing or sneezing.
